“According to Healthcare Without Harm, U.S. hospitals generate more than two million tons of medical waste each year. Much of that waste is unused medical supplies and equipment. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization estimates that more than 10 million children under the age of five die in the developing world due to inadequate medical care.

So what can be done?

MedShare is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving healthcare and the environment through the efficient recovery and redistribution of the surplus of medical supplies and equipment to those most in need. We collect surplus medical supplies and equipment from hospitals, distributors and manufacturers, and then redistributes it to qualified healthcare facilities in the developing world. We also outfit medical missions and safety net clinics in both the U.S. and abroad.”

Basically, MedShare is an amazing organization that bridges the gap between surplus and need that relies almost entirely on volunteers and donations. You can help, here’s how.
1. Volunteer
If you live in the Atlanta area, help sort the supplies that MedShare recieves. You do not need to make a major commitment for this, just a few hours whenever you can. It makes an HUGE difference!
2. Urge hospitals and Doctors in your area to donate surplus medical supplies.
Even if you don’t live in the Atlanta area, you can still help to get medical supplies to people that need it. Write letters, make appointments, and talk to your connections in order to urge medical institutions in your area to give to MedShare.
