Go Green.

A lot of times when I think of changing the world, I think of advocacy and volunteer work related to people. Ending world hunger, poverty, human trafficking, abuse, and preventable disease is daunting enough without thinking about every other problem in our world. However, I think that as citizens of the world we have a responsibility to care for it. This is why today’s suggestion of how  you can change the world is to “go green“. There are many ways to do this, however there are three changes to make in your everyday life that will help the environment without cutting into your time and resources too much. Also, these will save you money each month, which you could use to give to an organization you are passionate about.

1. Recycle

This one is obvious. If you are like me, you have been encouraged to do it your whole life. However, few of us go out of our way to actually recycle and conserve non-recyclable materials. There are a lot of dos and don’ts when it comes to recycling, and literally every county has different rules. In lieu of trying to write my own comprehensive guide, here is one that does a great job of explaining what to recycle.

2. Take Public Transportation

Yes, it is shocking. There is this idea that public transportation is dangerous, dirty, slow, etc. The extent to which these stereotypes are true depends on the city in which you live. However, for the most part, public transportation does take longer than driving, but you can spend that time  reading, getting work done, or just breathing without having to worry about traffic. Also, once you get the hang of it, public transportation really isn’t dangerous. I take public transportation around Atlanta all the time and I have never really felt unsafe. Not to mention, you will considerably cut down your carbon emissions by not driving, and save on gas.

3. Save on Energy and Water

Turn off lights, don’t watch as much T.V., time your showers, turn off water while shaving, don’t preheat the oven except for pastries, there are a lot of ways to save on energy and water. Literally any or all of these will help protect the Ozone layer, and save money!

So, there are my two cents about the environment and going green. Please adopt these into your life to help change our world for the better.

  1. May I add a few more? hang out the laundry sometimes instead of using the dryer all the time; use a toaster oven instead of the oven if you’re just heating something up (like pastries), walk or bike to your destination, if possible; get one more wearing out of your clothes before washing them; recycling also means giving your stuff away to other people when you don’t need them anymore

  2. I still remember my school’s environment teacher’s theory of 3Rs, Reuse, Recycle and Remember.

And the part of the world I’m from, cycle is better than public transportation. Fuel prices are always increasing, so the cost of public transportation is equally high, not to mention the overly crowded vehicles during the office hours. If we can have a separate lane for cycles, that would be very environment-friendly and healthy as well.
