An Ode to Moms (A Mothers’ Day Gift Guide)

Since Mothers’ Day in the U.S. is this Sunday, I thought it would be appropriate to dedicate a post to a group of people that changes the world on a daily basis: moms. I seriously love my mom. God has used her to plant a passion for social justice and abolition in me from the time I was a child. She is a provider, a voice of reason, a best friend, a cheerleader, and a confidant. Since a lot of people have a mom this important that has helped shape them into a world-changer, I thought that this week’s suggestion for how to change the world could be a list of three world-changing Mothers’ Day gifts

What if your mom woke up to this face instead of breakfast in bed on Sunday?

1. A Goat
Forget flowers, what mom doesn’t want a farm animal? Just kidding… but you could honor her and help change the world by purchasing a goat (or other farm animal) for a family in poverty through Heifer International or World Concern. This life-changing gift provides the family with milk and a source of income.

2. Freedomijmecard
Instead of chocolate, of which many major brands may be connected to slavery, you can help free slaves through a Mothers’ Day Ecard from International Justice Mission (IJM). IJM is an organization that works to free slaves and enact structural changes to prevent slavery.

3. Another Child to Love
womanwritingletterYou know how your mom’s words of encouragement have helped you through life. Why not provide that for another child? Sponsor a child through Compassion International or World Vision in your mother’s name. Then they will write and receive letters that can encourage the child, and that child will receive education and medical care. It’s a win-win.
