Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it. -Hebrews 13:2
Showing genuine, unsolicited hospitality can truly impact someone’s life. I have experienced joyful hospitality from people and it has led me to want to show it to others. However, it can sometimes be difficult to know how to do so. You don’t want it to feel forced or awkward. So, here are a few practical ideas that you can show hospitality this summer.
1. Plan a fun thing for kids you know!
Showing hospitality to children is one of the most fun things ever. Also, you give your friends (their parents) a break. You can do anything from pizza and a movie to taking them to the pool in your apartment complex and they will think it is the bomb.
2, Host with a purpose.
You can remove the awkwardness of inviting others over if there is a purpose behind the gathering. Is your small group meeting at a coffee shop? Invite them to your place for light refreshments instead!
3. Return the Favor
If you don’t know where to start with showing joyful hospitality, think of a time it was shown to you, and then return the favor. Who is the last person that invited you to their house? They are a great place to start!
Lastly, I know some people don’t show hospitality because they feel that their home, their culinary skills, or they themselves do not have enough to offer. However, one of the beautiful things about sharing your home with someone is that it gives them insight into you. That vulnerability builds authentic relationships. If the last person that had you over created a 5 course gourmet dinner, and you’re more of a chips and salsa with a glass of water type of host, don’t change! The most genuine hospitality can only happen when you are being genuine, not stressing over how to cook a new recipe.
