WhY it Matters

We have all heard of the YMCA. Most of us view it as a “Gym and Swim” type of place. A few of us might know that they have daycare or after school programs, maybe some kids classes. If not that, we at lease know the song by the Village People. However, it was not until about a year ago that I really understood the impact that the YMCA makes across the globe. For this reason, supporting the YMCA as a paying member, a volunteer, or a donor is this week’s suggestion of how you can change the world.

Every YMCA is different. The one that I grew up taking dance lessons at is WAY different than the YMCA of which I am currently a member. So, what I am saying about YMCAs may not apply to all locations. One thing I am sure of, however, is that all locations are making an impact on the wellness of each community.

The YMCA, in addition to providing affordable and quality fitness¬†options to historically underserved communities and providing a safe place for children to grow, provides many services to the community. My YMCA provides after school, high quality preschool, children’s classes, extensive senior services and classes, and GED programs. Furthermore, it is in a community that has virtually nothing like it for miles around. I have seen, just during my time working out and moving around, how they advise seniors and individuals with diabetes on proper nutrition. Lastly, they employ people who might not otherwise have living wage employment.

So, please, please, please support your local YMCA by either volunteering, being a paying member (which also saves you on buying a gym membership), or donating.

Have a great weekend! Enjoy this song to get you in the YMCA mood…
