Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself (Literally…)

relaxHappy Friday! I know the title of this post is a little bit odd, but this week’s suggestion of how you can help change the world is to practice proper self-assessment and self-care. If you are reading this, it is likely that you are someone who enjoys helping others. Whether it be through volunteering, you job, or informally as an involved community member, you probably pour out a lot of yourself. For me personally, it is easy to take pride in going out of my way to help clients or being exhausted from work. However, burned out and fatigued helpers are actually no help at all. So, if you think you might be burned out (or even if you don’t), I suggest the following self-assessment and self-care tips to help you help others better. As an aside, I am suggesting this because it is something I have not done well in the past, and therefore am having to work my way through burn out now.

  1. Check yourself. The Professional Quality of Life scale was developed for people in helping professions to be able to assess their current well-being. It is available online as a free tool to assist you in self-awareness and knowing where your own mental health stands
  2. Practice Boundaries. This is something I have been TERRIBLE about the past two weeks, which is probably why I feel such a need for this topic. It is Ok to say no. Do it.
  3. Practice self-care. I am not going into too much detail here, because different people need different care. However, as a minimum do make sure that you are doing SOMETHING every day that allows you to turn off your brain or reflect, and taking care of your body physically.
