Happy Friday, world changers! It is hard to believe that we’re already half way through July. It is even harder to think that August, and the new school year, is right around the corner. One positive part of the new school year for most kids is the excitement of fresh supplies: a cool backpack, maybe a binder with cool decoration. I remember how I loved the promise of a br
and new notebook for a class, making me feel like I would do well in that class. However, as anyone who has been on the paying adult side of the school supply list, these things are anything but cheap. Therefore, this week’s suggestion of how you can change the world is to participate in a school supply/ backpack drive in your area, that many nonprofits and churches tend to facilitate. However, you probably don’t need a whole blog post telling you that it’s a good thing to do. So I am being more specific
Quality > Quantity
Kids whose families would benefit from some free school supplies are just li
ke every. other. kid. They want the composition book with the paisley pattern over the plain old black and white. They would love a 24 pack of colored pencils, even if the list only says 12. And, let’s be real. Family dollar’s $5 backpacks are not only ugly, but in the hands of the right 4th grade boy, they won’t even last them until Christmas. As you are purchasing and filling a backpack, think of what you would want your own children to have. Quality supplies will set these students up for success, and if I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times: education is the only proven way to escape generational poverty.
- Get the word out!
Find out where people are hosting backpack giveaways, and after donating your contribution, help them market! Leave fliers in school supply sections, mention it to people you know that may need assistance in this way, and help these organizations reach the people that they are designed to serve! Nowadays, many places are even turning the backpack giveaways into overall fun back to school events by partnering with organizations that do everything from free physicals to benefits screening.
Well, have a wonderful weekend! If it takes you into a store for some school supplies, I hope this post assisted you in some way. See you next week
